Sandals come in all kinds of shapes but essentially they’re considered footwear by which the sole is held to the person’s foot by straps that pass around the ankle or a form of thong. Sandals are primarily worn in the summer or during warm weather. During the heat they allow air to the wearer’s feet whilst the cost to purchase is generally lower than standard shoes as less material is required to produce them. Often in more developed countries sandals are also used as a fashion item on nights out or to dress up an outfit. Any age can wear a sandal from babies to elderly adults; it’s not uncommon however for certain ages to wear particular styles which evolve with the wearer’s age and thus stereotype.

Sandals are considered the oldest known footwear, dating back at least 10,000 years with different variations available worldwide. The ancient Greeks wore sandals made of willow leaves and fibres with straps that wove around the leg. Cork was sometimes used as a layer in the sole to add height and thus stature to the wearer. The ancient Egyptians wore sandals that were made of palm-leaves and papyrus whilst the Japanese are fond of the geta, an elevated thong .There are a huge range of sandals available from caligae, a heavy-soled Roman military shoe that has become popular in the current summer fashions. Many of the traditional forms of footwear have been moulded into fashionable mass produced products to be worn in the western world, these fashion symbols often include the espadrille, flip flops (a cheap alternative to shoes in the summer), Roman sandals and saltwater sandals predominantly worn by children.

Generally, the summer season in most regions of the world has an evident increase in tourism whilst outdoor activities usually increase as a result of the warmer and more favourable conditions. Women often wear sandals as soon as the weather is dry and warm enough to show off their brightly coloured nail varnish; however sandals are often worn during evening events.
